Map of volcanic alert levels in Italy

A map showing the alert levels for Italian volcanoes, issued by the Civil Protection Department together with regional civil protection authorities, is now online

The map uses colors to represent the alert levels for the Campi Flegrei, Vesuvius, Stromboli, Vulcano, and Etna volcanoes. These levels describe the state of activity of each volcano, indicating whether it is in equilibrium or disequilibrium.

Alert levels are determined based on a combination of monitoring parameters and data on any ongoing events. They are represented by the colors green, yellow, orange, and red, which indicate the possible evolution of the volcano’s state of activity. The alert levels are declared by the Civil Protection Department, in close coordination with the regional civil protection authorities.

No alert levels have been established for the Colli Albani, Panarea, Lipari, and Pantelleria volcanoes, while those for the island of Ischia are currently being defined.

By clicking on each volcano, represented by a triangle, you can learn more about its main characteristics and, where available, access information on appropriate behavior and national emergency planning, as well as links to further details.

Using the “Manage layers” button in the upper-left corner, you can also view underwater volcanoes, for which no alert levels have been established.
